Beyond This Night

It is nearing midnight in an unknown region of Ritchka.  We've been hiding in a cave far from any city's reach.  It's dark and hollow, and we have to talk in hushed tones so we're not heard.  It isn't hard for me, I'm more than used to it.  It's harder for her though.  Silence isn't her forte.  At all.
"It's freezing in here. . ." she says as her voice echoes throughout the cave.  
I put my index finger over my mouth.
"Oh, right. Sorry," she whispers.  I notice she's shivering.  I can't blame her, my planet has never been known for its warm climate, and tonight seems colder than usual.  I'm fairly certain there's a blizzard going on outside.  I look over at her and wrap my jacket over her shoulders.  She needs it more than I do.
She looks at me with earnest eyes.  I know what she's about to say.  Something along the lines of 'no, don't, I'm fine'. But I know better.
"No," I tell her, "keep it."
She looks down and smiles coyly.  "Do you think we'll make it out of here alive?  Honestly?"
I nod.  "We'll get out of here alive.  Whether or not all of our limbs will be intact is another question."
She laughs, knowing that I'm joking.  I love her laugh.  It's genuine and melodic and so different from my own.
Fumbling through her bag, she finally pulled out the sleeping bag from Callispo.
"Are you calling it a night?" I ask her.
She looks at me with weary eyes and nods.  Before I know it she's asleep and I'm alone.

I look over at her and I wonder if she knows how beautiful she is.  I wonder if she has someone at her home that loves her as much as I do.  I then lay down beside her, and the last thought that traces through my mind was that I dreaded the day when I would have to let her go. . .
